Ambition…The Key to a Dancer’s Dreams

Ambition is the dedication, drive and determination one has for prospering and achieving their goals in life. Humans are all the same, we each have dreams and desires that we wish to complete in life. The ambition to achieve those goals is the driving force that can lead each person to success. Though I am young, I have devoted my time to completing my many ambitions in life. A major part of my life is being a dancer; I love having the ability to express myself without words and feeling a sense of accomplishment when the audience applauses. For one to be a successful dancer, one must acquire ambitious traits. I used ambition to fulfill some of my dreams to become a dancer.

A dream does not just happen, it is a person that must make it happen. It takes hard work, dedication, sacrifices and strength to excel in my desires. I began my life as a dancer at five years old. There was not much to aspire to at five except wearing pretty costumes, make up, and feeling like a princess. It was not until years later that I decided this was something I would like to pursue in my life. When I was younger it was always my dream to attend LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts. I knew I had to work extremely hard before I could even consider auditioning. I spent about two years of vigorous training and constant stretching in order to prepare for my upcoming audition. Within these short two years, I advanced and matured in all aspects of dance. The audition day was slowly approaching and I spent endless hours in the dance studio. It was necessary to make sacrifices in order to be completely focused on my main goal of the moment. Audition day had finally arrived and I knew I only had one chance to make a first impression. I worked extremely hard for this and could not ruin my chances of fulfilling my dream. I entered my audition prepared to do my very best. My level of confidence was so immense I felt like I was the only person in the studio. I believe my focus and passion for dance are traits that allowed myself to standout and receive an acceptance letter into LaGuardia. After achieving my goal, I was glowing as bright as the sun on a warm summer day. This accomplishment made me strive for new ambitions and challenge myself toward new goals.

A new opportunity presented itself which meant another audition and a shot at displaying my ambition. This was a chance of a life time; I was able to share the stage at Lincoln Center with the Martha Graham Dance Company performing in All-City Panorama. There were high expectations due to the fact that professionals would be dancing as well. Preparing for this performance required a huge amount of commitment and sacrificing every Saturday for three months. It took a lot of hard work and practice to look even half as amazing as the Graham Company dancers. I was determined to look just as great as the professionals by opening night. The whole cast had such high, positive energy that grew and grew on performance day. When I reached the stage a huge adrenalin rush passed through my body and I gave the most magnificent performance and performed to the best of my abilities. The entire experience was one I will never forget and feel extremely proud because not many people can say they performed in Lincoln Center.

Ambition is also an important aspect of a dancer’s intellectual side. A dancer’s career can end just as easily as it began. The life of a dancer is physically demanding and injuries are bound to happen. For this very reason a dancer’s education is crucial. Sometimes it is difficult to balance dance and maintain good grades. If I did not have a blistering passion for dance I would not have the drive that I do to do well in school as well as excel in dance. A great quality to obtain is the constant ambition to learn. In the modern day world it is important to be a well rounded person in order to be successful. College is an important part of the academic process; a student must work just as hard on maintaining exceptional grades as they do on their dancing in order to be accepted into the college of their choice.

My ambitious quality has helped me achieve many of my dreams so far. Continuing to work hard and set goals to challenge myself will make me as successful as I can be. My life has not yet nearly started and I am determined to accomplish much more than I already have. I plan to make my goals for the future come true. I will continue to maintain good grades, mature as a dancer and be the best that I can in anything that I do. The ambition I have will carry me as far as I strive to go.
